Pos Malaysia pays homage to Chinese painting of a ‘serama’

For the first time ever, Chinese painting will grace the first-day cover issued by Pos Malaysia in celebration of the Chinese New Year.
The picture of an ayam serama, a local breed of ornamental cockerel, perching proudly atop a rocky cliff is the masterpiece of Dr Wong Kum Peng.
With its chest puffing out and feathered tail perking up, the bird holds its head high, crowing to usher in the Year of the Rooster.
“It is different from the type of fowl that Chinese artists normally paint. This miniature type, which is unique to Malaysia, struts in a ramrod-straight posture for people to admire,” Dr Wong, 64, said.
The invitation from Pos Malaysia to produce a Chinese painting came six months after Dr Wong’s Chinese calligraphy was featured alongside a khat (Islamic calligraphy) artwork and a Tamil script for philatelic products themed nilai murni (noble values) in June.
Dr Wong, the past president of the Calligraphy Society of Malaysia, insisted that his artwork must appear in its entirety without any alteration.
It is simply because a piece of Chinese painting is the result of the deliberate placement of various elements, including the painting (subject), the calligraphy (title and date) and the seal (name of artist). Even the blank space is part of the composition.
Pos Malaysia agreed, and did not crop anything out of the frame, much to the delight of Dr Wong.
This painting has been designed into a folder, miniature sheets and octagon-shaped stamps. They are set to be released today together with other ayam serama stamps.
The cockerel painted by Dr Wong is light brown, with hints of shiny gold – an auspicious colour associated with success and wealth.
The Chinese calligraphy presented in vertical lines reads: “Golden rooster announces triumphant news. When it crows, the world brightens up.”
It leaves room for people to ponder over the message.
“A rooster’s crow is a wake-up call. With the arrival of a new year, it is time to draw up new resolutions instead of continuing to wallow in despondency and low spirits,” Dr Wong said.
This is not only an honour for the retired veterinarian to produce an artwork for the national postal organisation, but also a recognition of the Chinese culture, which is an essential part of Malaysia’s multi-ethnic society.
“Chinese painting is an elegant art form that epitomises the Oriental culture of subdued expressions. It showcases the techniques of the artist and reflects his inner world, values and outlook on life.
“Precise brush strokes and the alluring use of ink are combined to produce a graceful effect,” he said.
Dr Wong was pleased with the open-mindedness and inclusivity of Pos Malaysia in featuring the country’s diverse culture.
“Without communication and exchanges, a common understanding cannot be achieved.
“The different cultures in our country have to prosper together. I hope there will be more of such platforms to celebrate all forms of art,” he added.

SingPost to issue stamp set to mark 50 years of Singapore's National Day Parade
A set of stamps to commemorate 50 years of Singapore's National Day Parade (NDP) will be launched on Monday (Aug 8), SingPost said in a press release on Friday.
The set will comprise seven stamps, each featuring NDP highlights over the years.
These highlights include the 1970 NDP featuring Singapore's first flypast of the state flag, the 1976 NDP which was held for the first time at the newly completed National Stadium, the 2007 NDP at the Float@ Marina Bay, the first time a new venue was chosen and, lastly, the 2016 NDP which marks the first of the next 50 years of Singapore's growth and development, as well as the first National Day celebration back at the rebuilt National Stadium.
Each set of stamps comes in six denominations: 1st local, 2nd local, 60 cents, 70 cents, 90 cents and $1.30.
There is also a pre-cancelled first day cover at $5.20 that comes affixed with the complete set of stamps.
"While every stamp creation and dedication is special, these ones are extra special. We are excited to dedicate these classic stamps, and what better occasion to do it than at this year's National Day celebration," said Mr Woo Keng Leong, Chief Executive Officer, Postal Services, SingPost.
The stamp sets will go on sale from Aug 8 at all post offices and the Singapore Philatelic Museum. They may also be purchased online at www.stampdelight.com, or from the SingPost pop up store at HDB Hub Atrium on Aug 8 and 9, from 11am to 8pm.

素有“风下之乡”美誉的沙巴，遭菲律宾组织入境掳人危机不断，近日更是闯入利吉丹岛（Pulau Ligitan）水域劫持船只，其历史渊源和国际关系，可以从集邮收藏窥知一二。

邱宜伟：2岛曾引领土纠纷
炮台街马六甲邮票博物馆内的邱氏邮社业主邱宜伟接受《古城》社区报访问时表示，沙巴西巴丹岛及利吉丹岛水域曾经引起领土纠纷，惟最后海牙国际法庭裁决两岛主权归属大马。
他说，大马邮政公司更趁着配合“第二系列大马岛屿和度假海滩”首日封，在2003年6月28日以其胜诉官司的两大岛屿作为主题，地图绘画形式明确标出两岛在大马范围内的地理位置。
“沙巴在独立之前属于北婆罗洲殖民地，曾经使用不同图案的邮票，包括1894年各式风土文化及1950年的乔治六世肖像。其中纳闽在1892年以维多利亚女王为肖像的邮票，甚至包含英文、华文和爪夷文。”
邱宜伟指出，沙巴其后在1963年9月16日加入马来西亚联邦宣布独立，都有推出相关的首日封和邮票作为历史印记。先前通用的北婆罗洲邮票，也随之在1964年7月1日正式走入历史，被划除改为沙巴一词。

此外，他表示，大马过去已经分别与新汶印泰联合发行首日封，展现国家之间的友好交情。
“东盟以外，大马邮政公司甚至曾经在2002年与中国联合发行珍稀花卉特种邮票纪念，并在2014年与香港邮政公司联合推出地道食品特别邮票。”

Singaporeans can now trace the nation's progress over the years through a showcase of stamps. To celebrate SG50, the Singapore Philatelic Museum has launched an exhibition with over 240 items, such as old stamps and postcards.
It opens to the public on Tuesday (Jul 21) and will run until Jul 31, 2016.
One of the stamps on display at the exhibition is the first stamp issued in Aug 9, 1966 to mark the nation's independence. Another highlight is a printing plate of the 1999 stamp that features Singapore's first President Yusof Ishak.
Visitors can also take some stamps home, by buying a folder with a sheet of 50 stamps from the exhibition.
Said Singapore Philatelic Museum’s general manager, Tresnawati Prihadi: “We use our stamps - that tiny piece of paper with images on it - to convey messages about Singapore, so we hope that through this exhibition, our younger generation will be inspired to see how they can contribute and do the best for our nation.”

SingPost launches goat-themed stamps to celebrate Year of the Goat
Local postal services company SingPost has released a set of stamps featuring illustrations of goats to usher in the Chinese New Year.
The latest set is the eighth in the series, issued yearly to depict the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac.
Chinese New Year is celebrated on the first day of the lunar calendar, which falls on Feb 19 this year. Based on the Chinese animal zodiac, this is the Year of the Goat.
A complete set of three stamps will cost $2.30, while a limited-edition collectors' sheet costs $16.80, said SingPost in a statement on Wednesday.

“新加坡旅游50年（1964—2014）”共包括五张色彩缤纷的邮票，描绘了新加坡的不同面貌，包括标志性建筑、本地美食、旅游景点以及本地生活环境等。
这套邮票有五种面值，分别是“第一级本地邮资”（1st local）、“第二级本地邮资”（2nd Local）、6角、9角和1元3角。一整套邮票的售价是3元47角。
该局也将推出其他邮品如首日封等，公众今天起可到各大邮政局、新加坡集邮馆，或上网www.stampdelight.com购买。

A new stamp issue featuring two popular myths and legends of Singapore will be released on Friday.
Entitled, Singapore's Myths and Legends, the issue illustrates the legend of Redhill, or Bukit Merah, about fierce swordfish that attacked villagers there till a boy's plan to trap them using banana tree trunks worked.
As the story goes, the boy was later killed by a king jealous of his subsequent fame, covering the hill with blood and turning it red.
It will also feature the legend of Sang Nila Utama, a prince from Palembang who, as the story goes, discovered the island of Singapore (known then as Temasek) while out on a hunting trip. According to the legend, the prince spotted what he thought was a lion, and named the island Singapura - Lion City in Sanskrit.

PHILATELISTS or anyone interested to view a collection of international stamps can head down to the Sutera Mall for the My Library Stamps Exhibition.
Held for the first time, the exhibition will run for four months from today to Nov 28.
It will showcase thousands of stamps collected over the years from four countries, namely, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam.
Tanah Sutera Development Sdn Bhd assistant general manager (properties) Goh Lak Jin said the exhibition features exclusive stamps dating as far back as the 1960s from the four countries.
“We will kick start the exhibition with the Singapore stamps to commemorate the country’s upcoming national day on Aug 9,” he said.
The Singapore stamps exhibition starts from today to Aug 24 while Malaysian stamps will be exhibited from Aug 27 for one month.
“The Malaysian stamp exhibition will be held in conjunction with Merdeka Day celebrations,” he said.
Goh said this will be followed by the Indonesian stamp exhibition which starts on Oct 1 while the Vietnam exhibition will take place on Nov 1.
Goh said the exhibition aims to nurture an interest in stamp collection, especially among the younger generation.
“It is also important that they learn how to preserve their stamp collection,” he said.
“Today, the art of stamp collecting is fast dying as the number of people sending letters has dipped.
“However, stamps are still crucial as it records a country’s celebration or commemorate a particular event taking place in the country,” he added.
Goh said that the event is supported by Pos Malaysia which has a booth set up for those who want to have their own personalised stamps.
“We are also selling Sutera personalised stamps which feature Malaysia’s four main celebrations and is available for RM30 per packet,” he said.
There will also be a talk in Mandarin by philatelist Choa See Ho on stamp collection on Aug 9 and 16.
Goh will give a talk in English on Aug 23.
Choa will be displaying one of the world’s rarest stamps in his private collection. Known as the Penny Black, it was issued by the British post office in 1840 and features a profile of the Queen Victoria.

‘I Am Singaporean’ stamps to mark nation’s birthday
A set of 15 local stamps, featuring familiar images signifying National Service and of Changi Airport’s control tower, among others, will go on sale from Monday (Aug 4) to celebrate Singapore’s 49 years of independence.
The I Am Singaporean set this year celebrates the “unique traits, values and characteristics of Singaporeans and this island we call home”, said Singapore Post in a press release on Sunday. Other images featured in the series include Singapore’s national flower, the Vanda Miss Joaquim, the iconic Esplanade building, as well the Republic’s penchant for acronyms.
This is the second of a three-set commemorative series to mark Singapore’s 50th birthday next year.
The first set of stamps – with the theme Our Journey Together – was released in August last year, showcasing examples of what Singaporeans have shared, overcome and achieved together as a nation.
This year’s set will be available at all post offices, the Singapore Philatelic Museum and online.
Besides the 15 1st Local stamps, other stamp products of this issue include the Miniature Sheet, the Pre-cancelled First Day Cover affixed with the complete set of stamps, the Pre-cancelled First-Day Cover affixed with Miniature Sheet, and the Presentation Pack with a complete set of stamps and a miniature sheet.

The I Am Singaporean set this year celebrates the “unique traits, values and characteristics of Singaporeans and this island we call home”, said Singapore Post in a press release on Sunday. Other images featured in the series include Singapore’s national flower, the Vanda Miss Joaquim, the iconic Esplanade building, as well the Republic’s penchant for acronyms.
This is the second of a three-set commemorative series to mark Singapore’s 50th birthday next year.
The first set of stamps – with the theme Our Journey Together – was released in August last year, showcasing examples of what Singaporeans have shared, overcome and achieved together as a nation.
This year’s set will be available at all post offices, the Singapore Philatelic Museum and online.
Besides the 15 1st Local stamps, other stamp products of this issue include the Miniature Sheet, the Pre-cancelled First Day Cover affixed with the complete set of stamps, the Pre-cancelled First-Day Cover affixed with Miniature Sheet, and the Presentation Pack with a complete set of stamps and a miniature sheet.

马年邮票被批“像烧鸡”，设计师说，设计灵感来自汉代浑圆的马匹形象，设计抽象难免会有人看不懂。
《新明日报》昨日报道，新邮政推出的马年纪念邮票，被民众批评马儿太圆，有人说像烧鸡，更有人说像猪。
设计这组邮票的廖德聪（50岁，创意总监）受访时说，他的设计灵感其实来自汉代身材浑圆饱满的马匹形象。汉代画家画的马虽然线条简单，感觉很朴素，不过有强烈的运动张力，以及写意浪漫的风格。
他说，从2008年开始，他就为新邮政设计十二生肖系列邮票，这是新邮政推出的第二轮生肖系列邮票。
整个系列的概念，就是用几何图形来构图，这是比较西方的做法，与中国传统色彩浓厚的十二生肖结合，就有种中西合璧的感觉。

Special stamps to preserve memory of Singapore’s vanishing trades
Singapore Post will release a special stamp issue on vanishing trades in Singapore this week.
It will feature trades such as the “kachang putih” man, the parrot astrologer and the knife sharpener.
Other trades featured include ice-ball sellers, cobblers and lantern makers.
These tradesmen were once a common sight on the five-foot-ways of shophouses in Singapore.
But they are fast disappearing as the skyline of a modern financial and maritime hub replaces the old townscape.
SingPost said the colourful but now fading trades are part of Singapore's rich cultural heritage, and it hopes to preserve memories of them with the stamps.
The special issue of 10 stamps will go on sale on October 16 at all post offices in Singapore and SingPost's online shopping portal.
Pre-cancelled first day cover and presentation packs will also be available at the same outlets.

每年迈入8月份时，不难看到电视上频频播出我国国父东姑阿都拉曼在吉隆坡默迪卡体育场，带领万人高喊“默迪卡”的片段。而这个感动及令人振奋的画面，至今仍深深的烙印在马来西亚人民的心中。
你知道吗，为了欢庆及纪念我国独立的大日子，当年各州皆於同年推出了马来亚独立纪念封。
这些纪念封不仅是记载我国告別殖民时期的歷史，同时也纪念及见证著我国独立的辉煌成绩，意义非凡！
每个州属都有数款不同设计的纪念封，包括吉打、霹雳、玻璃市、吉兰丹、登嘉楼、檳城、柔佛、雪兰莪等。
不管是印有国父东姑阿都拉曼、各州州旗抑或是我国地图的纪念封，都象徵著各族人民和谐及爭取独立的一幕。
黄亚礼收集50纪念封
当时由於许多小镇上都没有邮政局，加上邮寄服务也不甚发达，因此许多书店及印刷商唯有联合设计及印刷许多不同款式的马来亚独立纪念封。
今年，我国已独立56週年，而这些纪念封仍是不少“封迷”的珍藏之宝。
来自巴生的黄亚礼现年63岁，是一名经营跳蚤市场的商人。在1950年出世的他是从2007年才开始收集马来亚独立纪念封。目前，他已收集约50个马来亚独立纪念封。
多年来，他也多番到各地去网罗遗漏的纪念封。
黄亚礼坦承，自己喜欢收集纪念封的原因主要是这些纪念封的意义及价值，加上隨著我国独立的日子越久，这些纪念封便更具歷史价值。
为了完善保存这些纪念封，他將纪念封存放进塑料袋中。减少纪念封与四周环境接触，便能防止纪念封泛黄及遭蛀书虫破坏。
“因为纪念封有丝毫的破损，或多或少都会影响了它本身的价值。”
他也曾上网搜罗，可是却发现这些纪念封的价钱不断標高，甚至达到500令吉，让他大吃一惊。
邮寄比电邮有意义
黄亚礼说，隨著网络科技越来越发达，就越少人使用邮寄服务。
“或许现在许多事物都讲究速度，导致邮寄服务也渐渐地不再受到重视。”
他不忘呼吁年轻一代应多使用邮寄服务，以促进我国在邮寄方面的服务。
黄亚礼也经常都会给身边的亲友写信，因为他认为信中的字字句句都代表了他最真诚的问候及心意。
“虽然邮寄会比电邮更费时，但当中的意义更为不同。”

Collection stamped with distinction
An avid collector of stamps, coin, and bank notes is putting his passion to good use
PHILATELIST R. Govindasamy possesses a rare collection of stamps, coins and bank notes which date as far back as 1857.
And, he can fetch as much as RM300,000 each for some of the rarer pieces in the collection.
A former banker, Govindasamy, 63, has been collecting these items for 35 years.
Due to his vast experience and knowledge, the avid collector has gone on to become a stamp valuer, exhibitor and dealer, who is also a member of the World Philatelic Society.
He has also helped to establish philatelic societies for secondary schools in Ipoh.
His collection includes Malayan stamps (1867/1957) and Straits Settlement stamps (Queen Victoria, King Edward, King George V and VI and Queen Elizabeth) which are priced between RM50,000 and RM500,000.
For coins, there are the Straits Settlement coins, starting from a quarter cent to half cent, one cent, five cent, 10 cent and 50 cent.
A coin which is in good condition can fetch about RM20 and above.
Another interesting collection is bank notes from The Government of the Straits Settlement (1935), Malaya (1935) and Britain (1941).
Govindasamy said a valuable stamp must be in mint condition, while a coin must not be scratched, free from defects and retained its original lustre.
"To date, Malaysian stamps, coins and notes are a much sought-after commodity by collectors around the world.
"In fact, stamp collectors are increasing as they can now easily purchase first-day covers and stamps by putting in a standing order with Pos Malaysia or purchase online." He added that stamp collecting moulds a person's character. It helps a philatelist to maintain calm and appreciate everything around them. His modest shop, US Agency, is located in Jalan Sultan Idris Shah here.

国家博物馆在国庆日当天举办限量版纪念品开售仪式。

配合50周年庆，当局即日起将配合国庆日举办一连串活动，及推出50周年限量版邮票、金币和银币。
马来西亚博物院局总监拿督依布拉欣指出，为了50周年年纪念，与大马邮政公司和国家银行合作，推出限量版邮票、金币和银币，并在国庆日当天在国家博物馆举办盛大开售仪式。
他说，限量版邮票上将印制全马各地博物馆和博物院外观，每枚邮票60仙，能作邮寄用途，全国仅发售150万枚。
他指出，画家张礼棠（Cheong Lai Tong）在国家博物馆外墙上所绘的壁画，将印制在纯金及纯银硬币上，售价将以市场金价作标准，金币和银币全国限量发售2万7750枚。
30日办博物馆之夜
他说，当局同时开放给雪隆区各源流中学报名参加于8月30日举行“博物馆之夜”活动。
他说，该活动是供14至17岁中学生参加，只有150个名额。
“创办于1963年的国家博物馆，即日起将展览马来西亚50年的演变，包括沙巴及砂拉越当年如何成为我国领土的历程。”
依布拉欣今早在马来西亚博物院局，为国家博物馆50周年纪念召开记者会时，这么指出。
出席者包括马来西亚博物院局副总监万加玛鲁丁及国家博物馆主任卡玛鲁巴林。
此外，国家博物馆在9月3日，将会邀请历届馆长及画家张礼棠等嘉宾举行讲座会，而且博物馆大门外的150公尺外墙，也公开给大众进行艺术涂鸦，有关50周年的连串活动将会直到11月份。

依布拉欣指出，国家博物馆今年预计的游客人数原本是100万人，但由于特拉维斯路（Jalan Travers）原本的入口处附近目前进行捷运工程，令人以为博物馆“关闭”，造成游客人数大量减少。
他说，该入口处附近有一整排的路障，驾驶人士很容易错过该路口，也令人误以为博物馆已关闭，与捷运公司讨论问题后，当局已建设了“国家博物馆每天开放”的告示牌于路旁，因此今年的游客人数也从100万人的目标降低至70万人。
他指出，目前最重要的是提醒大众博物馆并没有“关闭”，一如往常每天对外开放，未来希望捷运工程完工后，能够带动国家博物馆的游客人数。

The four designs in this stamp issue portray Singapore's vibrant urban landscape nestled within a thriving garden with native plants and wildlife. Grow your own flower out of a stamp, with a first-of-its-kind, biodegradable series of stamps launched by President Tony Tan Keng Yam at the National Parks Board's (NParks) Festival of Biodiversity at VivoCity on Saturday.
A collaboration between NParks and Singapore Post, the special stamps come with small moss-rose seeds stickered on its front. One only needs to soak the stamp in water for a day and it can be sowed in soil.
In celebration of 50 years in Singapore's greening movement, a book titled Living in a Garden: The Greening of Singapore was also launched, together with a new biodiversity campaign for schools, where students audit their school grounds for fauna and flora and receive advice from experts for a suitable greening action plan.
Said President Tony Tan: "I am heartened to see that many Singaporeans are taking ownership of our City in a Garden vision, and helping to conserve Singapore's natural heritage for the benefit of future generations."
